Corporate Headquarters

This is my corner office. This is my Barbie dream sample room. This is my sanity. This is my mom cave. This is SHIMPROJECTS. I'm still learning to take baby steps. I'm learning how to be more 'balanced'. To not rush. To curb my Aries impulsiveness. To stop, drop and roll. And most importantly, decide when to move away from the computer, the planning and the designing, lock up the office and go home three blocks away, to my boys.

In conclusion to my previous write up titled Magic Spot- here are some snaps of our corporate world headquarters- located in the fabulous, sunny, slightly seedy South Beach, Florida. The 2 week bang out reno was definitely a highlow job- a mix of personal furniture stolen from my house- and inexpensive, functional, college-dorm-vibe finds...with new floating raw wood floors and the magic of white and grey paint a la Benjamin Moore...

Separating worklife from homelife is an important part of my quest for balance nirvana. Happy to be on that path!

IIDA Best of Asia Pacific Awards 2014

I was invited back to IIDA headquarters in Chicago last weekend to judge this year's Best of Asia Pacific Awards for 2014. Along with seasoned architect Joey Shimoda of Shimoda Design (named Contract Magazine Designer of the Year 2013) and Primo Orpilla of Studio O+A; we reviewed over 132 submissions ranging from small scale corporate projects to retail projects to my personal favorite, hospitality projects!

It was so great to see what's going on in the world of design on the other side of the globe- and it's interesting to see that the approach to design is similar to that of ours here in North America. The true talent lies in not only creating a visually harmonious space, but moreso, to solving and addressing and need and the program. I always say, a "design is only as good as the client"...without further a due, read more about the winners here!

And look!! Look!!! Check out this project by this incredible architecture firm based in Melbourne Australia, McBride Charles Ryan- for The Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School which we awarded a Best in Category for Cultural/Institutional/Educational Projects. Wish I was back in high school!

Judging Design

On September 6-7, I travelled to Chicago to be a part of the esteemed judging panel for IIDA's Best of Asia Awards. It was great fun to see so many fantastic commercial and residential projects from international firms including Yabu Pushelberg, Gensler, Stephen Yeung and many more- and it was also great to critique their viability for Honorable Mention and Best of Category awards.

Thanks to Dennis Krause (IIDA Sr. VP) and Cheryl Durst (IIDA CEO) for inviting me to be a part of the exciting challenge! It was an honor and I was flattered to give my two cents!
